Guofeng (Modern Chinese Aesthetic)
国风
Contemporary fusion of classical Chinese motifs with modern fashion, illustration, and graphic design.
About this aesthetic
Guofeng (literally "national style") is not a historical revival — it's an active, evolving aesthetic movement among Chinese Gen Z creators. It emerged around 2018 and exploded after 2021. Western analogues don't really exist: imagine if American teenagers spontaneously revived 1850s Americana fashion and made it cooler than streetwear, then layered it over modern photography conventions and electronic music.
In visual terms, guofeng combines: - Classical motifs (cranes, koi, lotus, dragons, mountain silhouettes, Tang/Ming/Qing palace architecture) - Saturated jewel-tone palettes (cinnabar red, malachite green, imperial yellow, ink black) - Modern composition rules (rule of thirds, shallow depth of field, fashion-photography lighting) - Often a single human figure in elaborate hanfu, qipao, or modernized ethnic dress
It is by far the most "Chinese-feeling" aesthetic that Western AI tools struggle to replicate authentically. Midjourney and Flux know it generally; Seedream, CogView-4, and Hunyuan know it natively.

Cultural context
Guofeng is contemporary, not historical. Avoid generic "ancient China" prompts — they read as cliché. Instead specify period (Tang / Song / Ming / Qing) or modernized hybrid. Best results come from naming specific garments (hanfu, qipao, changshan) rather than "Chinese clothing".
